 Employee Encounter
29th January 2019

On Tuesday, 29th January 2019, Parkside were thrilled to welcome Kathryn Gutteridge, the President of the Royal College of Midwives, to come and speak to all of Key Stage Three about her profession and the role of a midwife.

Kathryn was elected President of the RCM in June 2017 and is an established Consultant Midwife with a long history of clinical care in the NHS. She has worked in many diverse settings including neonatal services and community midwifery care. She is currently the Consultant Midwife and Clinical Lead for Low Risk Women at Sandwell and West Midlands Hospitals NHS trust. Kathryn is passionate about women’s issues and particularly in relation to childbearing. Kathryn specialises in women’s psychological, emotional and mental wellbeing during childbirth.

During her talk, Kathryn was able to talk extensively about all of the responsibilities and roles involved in midwifery, and drew attention to the care for patients from the moment a baby is conceived through to the aftercare. She showed us some of her key “tools”, as well as some images of the Serenity Birth Centre in Birmingham, which she helped to design. She also spoke about routes into the profession and answered some challenging and thoughtful questions from out pupils.

The pupils were completely engaged throughout and found the talk fascinating – Kathryn spoke enthusiastically about her passion for her job and inspired several pupils to investigate midwifery as a career.
